Adoption Week celebrates adoption in Scotland, it is funded by the Scottish Government and managed by Association for Fostering, Kinship and Adoption (AFKA) Scotland, Adoption UK (AUK) in Scotland and Scottish Adoption Register (SAR).

This year the theme for the week is

Adoption: The connection with past, present and future family.

We work with partners right across Scotland to celebrate adoption through the week and you will find that these events get added to in the coming weeks with events from Local Authorities and Voluntary Sector Organisations.

Soft Play family event

Sat 12th Nov @ 9 - 11am

Join us at Tumbles in Edinburgh for softplay. We have sole use of the facilities so come along and enjoy the space.

AWS 22 Welcome and information event

Mon 14th @ 7 - 8.30pm

Introduction to the week with AFKA, SAR and AUK Scotland Find out about the support available from these different organisations. An ideal opportunity for prospective adopters to find out what help is on hand.

FILM NiGHT
Transitions - A journey not a beginning

Tues 15th @ 7.00pm

The move for a child from a foster home to an adoptive home is complex and emotive. The repercussions of a difficult move can present challenges for adoptive family life in the early stages and have lasting impacts on the child and adoptive family. Scottish Adoption, City of Edinburgh and St Andrews Children’s Society have created a film around the adoption transition. In the film, adoptive parents, foster parents and social workers discuss the importance of getting the move from foster care to adoption right and offer tips based on research for best practice. Following the film, there will be a 10 minute Q&A session with those involved in making the film.

LUnderstanding FASD

Tues 15th @ 8.00 - 9.30pm

Listen to the FASD hub talk about supporting children and young people with FASD.

There will be a presentation and a panel discussion. This is suitable for people aready adopting and prospective adopters.

Sensory Ladders

Wed 16th @ 9.30 - 12.30pm

An introduction to the use of Sensory Ladders for regulation. This session is being delivered in partnership with ASI.

Navigating the School Environment with ACEs & Trauma

Wed 16th Nov @ 8 - 9.30pm

Gerry Diamond will increase your awareness of ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) , developmental trauma and the biological underpinnings. We will also look at the steps we can take to respond to our young people in a more trauma aware, trauma responsive , developmentally informed and respectful way.

Life story work
with Richard Rose

Thur 17th Nov @ 7pm - 9pm

Richard Rose (U.K.) is the Director of Child Trauma Intervention Services Ltd (CTIS) and Therapeutic Life Story Work International and is a leading specialist in supporting practitioners, parents and carers to engage with children affected by early life trauma and to help them achieve their full potential. Please join us for this opportunity to learn more from him about how we can discuss the importance of approaching life story work in a therapeutic and nurturing way. .

Have You Been Thinking About Adopting - ABERDEEN

Tues 15th Nov @ 2.30pm - 6.30pm

Join us for our Aberdeen Adoption Information Drop-In Event. This will be an in-person event at our new Aberdeen office at 62 Dee Street, AB11 6DS. There's no need to book a ticket, just turn up whenever suits you between 2.30pm and 6.30pm on the day. Please call 01224 878158 if you would like to speak to someone before the event.

The Bluebird Project

Wed 16th of Nov @ 1pm to 2pm

The Bluebird Project is a support service for birth mothers and birth fathers who have lost their children permanently to Kinship Care, Fostering or Adoption. Scottish Adoption is connected with over 100 birth parents who we support.

Come along for this lunchtime session and meet the team involved in The Bluebird Project. You will hear about the range of support services on offer, the innovative work already undertaken and how to make referrals.

Adoption Information Evening

Thur 17th Nov @ 7pm - 9pm

Scottish Adoption shall be holding an online Adoption Information Evening on Thursday 17th of November from 7pm to 9pm. The evening will give you the opportunity to hear from expert Senior Practitioners as well as from Adopters as they talk about their journey to parenthood. You will get the opportunity to ask any questions you have all in the comfort of your own home.
